Raised Beds and Planters

Our raised beds and planters are crafted with locally grown and milled rough cut cedar.

Why cedar?

Durability & Rot Resistance: Cedar's durability and natural oils resist decay, ensuring your planters stand the test of time.

Lightweight & Aromatic: Easy to move and aromatic qualities act as a natural insect repellent.

Eco-Friendly: Cedar is a sustainable wood and renewable resource due to its rapid growth; natural resistance to decay, insects, and fungal attacks; and local availability.

Why rough cut (vs. planed wood)?

Textured Surface: Rough cut cedar boasts a naturally textured surface, providing a unique and rustic aesthetic that adds character to your garden. Unlike planed wood, the distinct grain patterns and imperfections of rough cut cedar contribute to an authentic and visually appealing outdoor space.

Cost-Effectiveness: Opting for rough cut cedar offers a cost-effective solution without compromising on quality. The minimal processing involved in comparison to planed wood makes it a budget-friendly choice, allowing you to enjoy the beauty and durability of cedar without breaking the bank.

Strength: The thicker profile of rough cut cedar enhances the structural integrity of our planters, ensuring they withstand the demands of outdoor use, including exposure to varying weather conditions.

Seedlings

Seedlings are grown certified organic (from Slow Roots Farm) and repotted by The Good Shit into 3" coconut coir pots using ecological growing method. Pots are filled with a mixture of coconut coir and rabbit manure.

The combinations offered have been curated and designed by The Good Shit to create balanced and harmonious gardens by considering factors such as companion planting, visual aesthetics, and practicality.

Here's a breakdown of the reasoning behind the combinations:

Companion Planting: Many of the plant combinations follow the principles of companion planting, where certain plants are grouped together to enhance each other's growth, repel pests, or provide other mutual benefits. For example, basil is often planted near tomatoes to improve flavor and repel pests.

Diversity of Vegetables and Herbs: Each combination includes a variety of vegetables and herbs to provide a diverse range of flavors, textures, and nutrients. This not only makes your garden more interesting but also contributes to a balanced and nutritious harvest.

Aesthetics and Culinary Considerations: Selections focus on vibrant colors to create an aesthetically pleasing and visually stimulating garden. This not only adds beauty to your space but can also attract beneficial pollinators. Veggies and herbs commonly used together for preparing meals are also grouped according to culinary themes.

Seasonal Planning: The combinations take into account the growth habits and seasonal compatibility of the plants. For instance, taller plants are strategically placed to avoid shading shorter ones, and plants with similar water and sunlight requirements are grouped together.

Pollinator and Beneficial Insect Attraction: Including flowers and herbs in the combinations serves the purpose of attracting pollinators and beneficial insects which help to deter pests. This can contribute to increased yields and a healthier garden ecosystem.

CHICKEN MANURE

Our chicken manure (the literal Good Shit) comes from our happy and healthy backyard chickens and is aged a minimum of 6 months, which improves nutrient content, retains beneficial microorganisms to enhance soil health, reduces the ammonia content, kills any potential pathogens, and reduces weed seeds.
